Navigating Waterways: Understanding Channel Markers for Safe Boating

Dec. 5 2023 Boating Safety By Collins Marine

Embarking on a boating adventure brings the thrill of exploring open waters, but safe navigation is paramount. Channel markers play a crucial role in guiding boaters through waterways, ensuring a safe and efficient journey. The Collins Marine team wants to help you feel confident in your boating and navigation skills, so in this blog post, we'll delve into the essentials of understanding channel markers, deciphering their colors, numbers, and designations for a seamless and secure boating experience.

Red vs. Green: Decoding the Colors

One of the fundamental aspects of understanding channel markers is distinguishing between red and green markers. Red channel markers are triangular with an even number inside, while green channel markers are square with an odd number inside. A helpful mnemonic to remember is "red, right, returning." As you navigate back from offshore to the intercoastal waterway, ensure that the red channel markers are on your right side. Conversely, when heading from the marina towards open water, the green channel markers should be on your left side.

Channel Marker Numbers: Navigating the Water's Edge

As you approach the shore from open water, pay attention to the numbers on the channel markers. The numbers will ascend as you get closer to the intercoastal waterway. In simple terms, lower numbers (one and two) indicate the end of the channel, leading into the intercoastal, while higher numbers signify proximity to the marina.

Other Channel Marker Designations: Small Details, Big Importance

Upon reaching the end of the channel and navigating the intercoastal waterway, additional details on the channel markers become crucial. Red channel markers will feature a yellow triangle above the number(s), and green channel markers will have a yellow square. To maintain proper navigation, keep the yellow triangle on the side of the continental land mass. Visualize it as if you were sailing from Massachusetts to Key West, ensuring the yellow triangle stays on your right (starboard) side.

Understanding channel markers is fundamental for safe and confident boating. By grasping the distinctions between red and green markers, interpreting numbers, and recognizing the significance of additional details like yellow triangles, boaters can navigate waterways with precision. As you embark on your next boating journey, let the colors, numbers, and designations of channel markers guide you towards a seamless and secure experience on the open waters. Happy boating from the Collins Marine team!
